I will keep you and give you a covenant to be a light to the people and to open blind eyes, to bring out prisoners from the prison and those who sit in darkness from the prison house. The word that I have spoken, it shall judge him on the last day, for I havenot spoken by myself, but the Father who sent me has commanded me, what I should say and speak. I know his word is eternal life, so when I speak, I speak as the Father has told me.

After the covenant and laws were given to the people with strict orders to keep them, it was naturally a great sin to compare oneself with God himself. The chief priests who knew the scriptures and knew that Christ would come, completely overlooked Jesus work among the people, he was a thorn in their side. It turned into politics, they were afraid of losing their power and control over the people. It became a snare to them and a benefit to the rest of the world, for forgiveness was given to the Gentiles as prophesied.
